Join in the fun with St George's Day celebrations
April 16th 2008
On Wednesday April 23rd Rickmansworth will once again stage celebrations of England's national day, so come along and join in the fun. Celebrations commence at 2.00pm at the Halfway House pub on Uxbridge Road, Rickmansworth, where they will be hosting a fun-packed day of activities to celebrate traditional English food, culture and heritage.
St. George's Day is celebrated by several nations of which Saint George is the patron saint, including Catalonia (Spain), England, Portugal, Georgia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Republic of Macedonia and the Gora. For England, St. George's Day also marks its National Day. Most countries who observe St. George's Day celebrate it on 23 April, the traditionally accepted date of Saint George's death in 303.
At the Halfway House revellers will be entertained by Phoenix Morris dancers, maypole dancers from St Mary's CofE school, madrigal singing, a drill display from Rickmansworth, Watford and District Sea Cadets, live music and fairground rides for youngsters. Waitrose will be on site with Essentially English Food and Drink and healthy goody bags, plus residents will be treated to a feast of traditional fare such as cockney cockles, mussels and jellied eels. Local farmers and growers will be represented, with local produce available to purchase throughout the afternoon. Entry is free and everybody is welcome, so come along and enjoy the festivities!
From 6:30pm the party atmosphere will continue into the evening, with a classic hog roast and fish and chips on offer at the Whip and Collar pub, Uxbridge Road, Rickmansworth.
Happy St George's Day!
