Completion delay for the William Penn Leisure Centre

Gee Construction has confirmed to Three Rivers District council that it no longer expects to meet the completion target for the swimming pool at the William Penn Leisure Centre. The causes of the delays to date are disputed, and issues of responsibility are under negotiation.

William Penn Leisure Centre constructionThe causes of the delays to date are disputed, and issues of responsibility are under negotiation. Three Rivers District Council remains fully committed to ensuring that the project is completed as soon as possible, but within the Council’s fixed budget and quality requirements. All concerned have therefore been instructed to ensure that no corners are cut in a rush to completion.

Council officers meet formally with Gee Construction and the design team every fortnight to review progress, co-ordinate forthcoming activity and ensure that quality is maintained. Councillors will continue to monitor overall progress for the remainder of the scheme.

Customers and venue staff have already shown great patience, as temporary arrangements have inconvenienced users throughout the building. Council officers will ensure that users are updated on further developments.

Recent Progress

Behind the scaffolding which now screens the front elevation there has been progress on site. Both pools have been prepared for tiling, which should begin shortly.

Blockwork and internal walls are nearly complete, and specialist contractors have begun installing mechanical and electrical services.

Orders will shortly be placed for the very latest fitness and other equipment.
